Use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) in Change Rooms

All PEDs (which includes cell phones) are not to be in use while you are in the change rooms as this is to respect the privacy of other skaters. Any skater or anyone associated with the Club witnessed using a cell phone or PED in the change rooms during our programs will now be asked to turn their device off and further discussion with the family/guardian, and coach may be necessary.

Please note you are welcome to use your phone/PED in the lobby area and as well be aware of the postings through out the arena of the City of Mississauga's use of PED/cell phones.

Sickness Policy

Since the Flu season is upon us and for the comfort of all skaters and coaches, SMSC recommends if your child does not feel well please consider keeping them home.

It is ultimately your decision as their parent or guardian whether they attend their sessions.

Inclement Weather Policy

SMSC sessions run as scheduled in the event of inclement weather. We only cancel sessions due to inclement weather in the event that the City of Mississauga elects to close its facilities (including Meadowvale 4 Rinks). If the City were to make such a decision, we would post that information on our website home page and we would send an email to members. Please note that for members to be certain to receive such notices, they must subscribe to all email lists (log in to your online profile to be sure).

Rowan’s Law (Concussion Safety)

In accordance with Ontario’s Rowan’s Law (July 1, 2019), SMFSC is committed to promoting a safe sport environment through concussion awareness, prevention, and education.

Rowan’s Law is named after Rowan Stringer, an Ottawa high school athlete who passed away in 2013 after sustaining multiple concussions before her brain had fully healed. Her story highlights the importance of recognizing and properly managing concussions.

All skaters must complete a Concussion Acknowledgement Form each season during their initial registration. Skaters may not participate in club programs until this form has been received.

Please Note: Skaters in CanSkate, CanPowerSkate, and Star 1-4 programs are exempt from submitting the Rowan’s Law Acknowledgement Form; however, concussion safety protocols apply to all participants.

SMSC Complaints Reporting and Resolution

SMSC Members may submit a complaint in confidence to feedback@smfsc.ca

SMSC is dedicated to nurturing a culture that supports skating in a fun and friendly environment that challenges everyone to perform at their very best. SMSC will proceed as follows once the complaint has been received;

  1. An Executive Board member (President or Vice-President) will contact the complainant to discuss the situation in detail and the outcome they are seeking.
  2. The discussion will be recorded and identify if there is an immediate threat to the complainant.
  3. If the complaint is serious in nature, the executive Board Member will inform Skate Canada via their policy procedure.
  4. Within 2 weeks all parties involved will be spoken with and all relevant information recorded, protected and stored.
  5. The executive Board members (President, Vice president) and Coaching representative (if necessary) will decide on a realistic outcome, discipline and follow up meetings with parties involved.
  6. The Executive Board members will present to a special Board meeting the resolution that benefits all parties involved. A board vote will be needed. Privacy of the members involved will be mandatory.
  7. Response by the Member receiving the resolution approved will have 5 days to respond back to the Executive Board member.
  8. Communication in writing to both parties will be done once resolution has been agreed to and the complaint closed.

The above procedure will be followed however if a member has experienced personal harassment, which includes physical or verbal abuse (bullying behaviour) or has witnessed another member being bullied and would prefer to deal with Skate Canada directly, the member may also submit a complaint to the Complaint Review Officer at the Skate Canada national office as per the process in the Skate Canada Membership Complaints, Hearing and Investigation Procedures Policy. This would also be the procedure for the appeal process.

In most severe cases SMSC would put in a report to Skate Canada once the process has started and have that documented for further review if necessary.
