Learn to Skate at SMFSC – CanSkate
CanSkate
CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program and the starting point for skaters of all ages.
Designed for beginners, CanSkate builds confidence on the ice through fun, structured group lessons focused on balance, control, and agility. Skaters progress at their own pace in a positive and supportive environment.
Lessons are led by NCCP-certified professional coaches, supported by trained Program Assistants who provide encouragement and additional guidance throughout each session.
Skaters earn badges and ribbons as they develop new skills, helping to create clear goals and a strong sense of achievement. CanSkate is also the foundation for all Skate Canada skating pathways, including STARSkate, CanPowerSkate, and synchronized skating programs.
CanSkate Expectations
CanSkate is a shared training environment built on safety, respect, and awareness.
On-Ice Expectations
Skaters are expected to:
- Follow coach instructions at all times and maintain awareness of other skaters
- Give space to coaches and other skaters on the ice
- Keep moving during activities and avoid stopping in one area for long periods
- Follow on-ice safety expectations and instructions at all times
Parent / Guardian Expectations
Parents and guardians are expected to:
- Remain in the arena during the session
- Allow skaters to participate independently on the ice
- Direct questions or concerns to coaching staff after the session
Program Information
- CanSkate runs year-round
- Skaters must provide their own skates (no rentals available)
- CSA-approved hockey helmets are required up to and including Stage 5
- Gloves are mandatory for all skaters
- Skaters should wear warm, comfortable clothing that allows full movement
